About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.
About the Position
The Research Officer & Translator is responsible for monitoring local media and reporting on developments relevant to Australian interests in Qatar and the region. Duties include research, analysis and reporting on political, economic, legal and security developments and the provision of translation and interpreting services.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Research, analyse and prepare reports on political, economic, trade and investment issues relating to Qatar that are of interest to the Australian Government.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with political and economic contacts in government, other missions to Qatar based in Doha, think tanks, commentators and private sector stakeholders.
- Provide translating and interpreting services between English and Arabic for the Embassy
- Prepare and maintain biographical data and CVs for key contacts
- Represent the work unit at events, conferences and seminars, and report on outcomes.
- Monitor local and international media outlets and key publications, provide regular summaries and ad hoc alerts to management, identify emerging issues and developments, and provide interpreting and translation services as required.
- Build relationships with journalists, social media commentators and media influencers to proactively identify media opportunities and secure media coverage for the Embassy and high-level visits.
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of high-level visits to Qatar
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications/Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and previous experience working in international relations, politics or development.
- Advanced understanding of Qatar’s political, economic, social and foreign policy context, and the ability to analyse and make recommendations on key developments and issues.
- Fluency in English and Arabic and a demonstrated ability to translate and interpret between the two languages
- High-level written and oral communication skills.
- High-level of initiative and ability to work independently within a small team.
- Demonstrated research and analysis skills and experience.
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Australian Government foreign and trade policy priorities.
- Demonstrated understanding of traditional and social media platforms.
- Excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work in a small team and perform in a multi-cultural work environment.
